Not when it's 120 degrees outside and you have a bun in the oven! Every year women ask me, "How did you do it through the summer?" Well, here is a collection of several tips and tricks about how to stay cool when it's so hot.

•Water. Avoid Dehydration! Drinking plenty of liquids not only helps your body stay cool, but it will reduce the amount of swelling in hands and feet that normally occur during the last few months of pregnancy. Try to drink eight to 10 glasses of water a day. You could also opt for other healthy drinks such as coconut water, lemonade, watermelon juice, iced mint or chamomile tea. AVOID coffee and soda. Caffeine dehydrates rather than replenishes the fluid in the body. Choose beverages with little added sugar and empty calories. Many suggest enjoying juicy, refreshing fruit such as melon, grapes and nectarines, straight from the fridge. Fresh veggies and fruits contain a lot of water, which has a cooling effect on the body. Don't forget fruit salad! Indulge in thick cold soups as well as clear soups with loads of veggies in it as complete meal options. I know a guy who freezes fruit before long hikes, an option to consider for long drives in the summer heat while pregnant. I personally enjoy Mint Water or Tea during the summer.

Try Metro Mint for a nice refreshing change MetroMint.com.

• The Spray Bottle: Fill a spray bottle with water or a mixture of, two parts rose water and one part plain water.Refrigerate and spray it on your face regularly to refresh and cool you down. A mini battery-operated fan makes a nice addition to any purse or hand bag. They're generally under $5 and most of them have a spray bottle attachment.

Generally Rose Water can be found in the baking section of your local grocer. Also, I highly recommend you use bottled water or the Evian spray. Arizona's water is full of fun things to dry your skin and make you break out. You can find the Evian mineral water mist at Target $10-15, Sephora $11-20 and Beauty Brands. www.shopevian.com has a bunch of fun ones to order as well.

• Ye Old Eye Patch: Put slices of cucumber in the fridge or freezer and put it on your eyes whenever you feel the need to cool down. An alternate suggestion is cotton balls or tea bags soaked in cooled water instead of the cucumber slices. My personal favorite is the Earth Therapeutics RECOVER-E Cucumber Eye Pads.

Kohls has the RECOVER-E Eye Pads for about $7/5pack, or try www.earththerapeutics.net ($6/5pck and free shipping on orders over $20)

• The Foot Cool Down: If you've got a foot-spa or even a large tub, fill it with cool water and use it. You can add some Epsom or Sea Salt to the tub. Adding a handful of marbles allows you to gently roll the soles of your feet over them, increasing circulation (and it feels good!) Occasionally trying to grasp and release the marbles with your toes will allegedly relax foot muscles. Please don't forget to dry off before you stand up! Or, get a pedicure. Ask the nail tech for something minty. She's bound to have it. When it comes to feet, I again direct you to Earth Therapeutics. Their Tea Tree foot spray is still on my shelf of must haves, and if there is one thing I can attest to, Tea Tree is remarkable. In a house full of boys with Athletes Foot, I was never a victim!

"Peppermint oil and wild mint cool skin
and enhance circulation, while aloe vera
and chamomile soften rough soles.
Liquid evaporates immediately, leaving
feet invigorated and deodorized."

• Stay in the Shade. Avoid going outdoors during the peak heat hours (11am to 5pm). If you go out, consider this: SUNSCREEN! Wide-brimmed hat, umbrella, sunglasses, baby powder can keep perspiration and heat rashes at bay, travel size deodorant. I would run out and turn mycar's AC about 10 minutes before I left the house.
http://www.dermalogica.com/us/products.html#/products/skin-purifying-wipes

Be sure to use sun shades and to crack the window. Make a list before you go out to minimize the time you spend out. Combine several errands into one trip. Delegate tasks like laundry, grocery shopping, taking children to school, etc. If you are a working mom-to-be, try to work out an arrangement where you can go in to the office earlier and step out earlier to avoid rush hour. If you can afford it look into reducing your hours at work or seeing if you can do a few days of paperwork at home, this will help avoid trips in a hot car and give you a chance to put your feet up for that afternoon nap.
Consider keeping wet wipes on hand for a quick cool-off when you need it (Evian spray?) And my personal favorite for all occasions, including headache and fever, a cool compress to the back of the neck. It is a miracle worker. For a quick cool-down, run your wrists under a cold tap to cool your pulse points and use that cool wet towel on your forehead and back of your neck.

• Check out the pool. No one is judging you now that you're prego! You will be able to take a break from the weight and cool off at the same time. Be realistic, don't go on the slide. Wear sun screen. Please.
Cool showers help out a lot as well. I used to take a short shower before I went out to keep me cool through all my errands and then a longer shower when I got home. I also switch to minty shampoo's and deep conditioners when it starts getting hot. They are relaxing and cooling... and tingly! I've found the Treat Me Right to be a continuous favorite ever the years, and a perfect finish when you return home after the pool.

• The Bedroom. Keep your bedroom as cool as possible. Use the fan, air cooler or air conditioner and keep the curtains drawn all day. Remember west facing rooms and walls usually get the maximum heat from noon to evening. Some relax their senses by putting rose petals or jasmine flowers in a bowl of water under the fan or next to the cooler. Yum!

• Clothing. Pregnant or not, I will be found in sun dresses every summer! While pregnant you should wear clothes that allow perspiration to evaporate, such as loose fitting cotton, cotton voile, linens. Avoid clothes made of polyester, blended and synthetic fibers. There are so many adorable maternity clothes out there! You will look adorable for that morning walk you know you should be taking (Morning walks tend to be cooler since the sun's rays haven't cooked the concrete buildings all day) If you go out at night, stay in more open areas, like the local park. Either way, walking is great when you are walking for two!

This dress is at 9monthstogrow.com
I also highly suggest BellyDanceMaternity.com
I do NOT recommend any of the shoes these models wear!
Make sure your shoes are comfy and supportive. I really like Merrel. They're expensive but well worth it. I love Earth shoes as well. And slippers. Couldn't deal with out slippers. They're so cozy and soft.

W/C:
http://www.bounty.com/Articles/Bounty/Chill%20out.aspx

http://www.ehow.com/how_4488000_keep-cool-during-summertime-pregnancy.html

http://www.babycenter.in/pregnancy/antenatalhealth/feelingtheheat/

Ironworkers at Dana-Farber: A touching story.

Follow this link to a super touching story about these construction workers making little kids receiving cancer treatment smile... Boston Local

Listed on NationwideMassage.com

<div id="nwm_link_div" style="width: 238px; Did you know that RSI is the leading cause of disability in working-age people in North America with 19 million people affected?

RSI has hit the largest single occupational group ever-computer users. Studies reveal that one-fifth to one-quarter of computer-keyboard users have RSI symptoms. The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that, on average, it takes employees longer to return to work after sustaining carpal tunnel syndrome than any other disabling injury, including amputation. Our students in school today are the workers of tomorrow and are using computers from an early age.

Do parents and teachers have a role in the prevention of RSI (also known as cumulative trauma disorder or CTD)? Will today's students become tomorrow's statistics with the rampant increase in RSI in the workplace? It is very common for an 8-year-old to use a computer both at home and in school, and it is increasingly evident that students use computers from elementary school through high school. Parents and teachers must pay attention to correct computer use-RSI is preventable.

Have you heard of anyone commonly complain about tired hands, pounding pain in the wrists, no feeling in the fingers, sore shoulders, or lower back pain?

If your answer is yes, this person, even the very young, may be suffering from "secretaries' hands" or what has become known as Repetitive Strain Injury (RSI) because they are using the computer the wrong way.

Note from JadabrëzLMT: I call them Chronic Holding Patterns.
